Drum Sanders: How They Improve Your Projects

Drum sanders have gotten complicated with all the open-drum versus closed-drum arguments, thickness planer comparisons, and debates about whether a benchtop model can do what a floor-standing machine does. As someone who ran workpieces through a drum sander for years on a borrowed machine before buying my own Jet JWDS-18, I learned everything there is to know about what actually matters in this tool. Today, I will share it all with you.

The drum sander occupies a specific role in a woodworking shop that nothing else quite fills. A planer makes wood thicker-than-reference into reference-thickness. A drum sander takes wood that is at reference thickness and makes the surface uniformly smooth, with consistent thickness across wide panels. For anyone building tabletops, cutting boards, or cabinet panels from glued-up stock, a drum sander is the machine that turns a sanding job that would take 45 minutes by hand into a 5-minute pass through the machine.

How a Drum Sander Actually Works

The drum — a cylindrical roller with sandpaper wrapped around it — spins at constant speed while a conveyor belt feeds the workpiece underneath it at a controllable rate. You set the head height to take a small cut on each pass, feed the board through, raise the head fractionally, and repeat. The key variable is feed rate: too fast and you get chatter marks; too slow and you burn the surface. I’m apparently someone who learned the hard way that feed rate matters more than drum speed, and now I run everything at a moderate feed and take lighter passes.

The drum itself is the obvious centerpiece, but the conveyor belt deserves equal attention. A conveyor belt that isn’t tracking straight will cause your workpiece to drift to one side, producing a tapered cut. Check conveyor tracking first any time you’re getting inconsistent results. The height adjustment mechanism — whether a handwheel, rack and pinion, or digital readout — should move smoothly and hold its setting without creep. The dust collection port is typically 4 inches and connects directly to your shop dust collector; without good extraction, drum sanders produce enormous volumes of fine sanding dust that coats everything in the shop within about three passes.

What Drum Sanders Are Actually Good For

Flattening and smoothing glued-up panels is the primary application. Take six boards glued into a tabletop and there will be slight thickness variation at every glue joint — the drum sander removes that variation efficiently without the risk of tearout that a planer creates in figured or reversing grain. Removing old finishes from reclaimed lumber is another strong use case; a drum sander strips decades of paint and grime back to clean wood quickly. Leveling veneer and thin panels where a planer would simply destroy the material is another place where the drum sander excels.

Choosing Between Benchtop and Floor-Standing Models

Benchtop drum sanders — the Jet JWDS-18, Grizzly G0459, Shop Fox W1676 — handle workpieces up to about 18 to 19 inches wide on a single pass. That covers most cabinet panels and tabletop sections. Floor-standing machines go wider, often 24 to 37 inches, and have more powerful motors that handle harder species without bogging down. For a hobby or small professional shop, a quality benchtop machine with a 1.5 to 2-horsepower motor handles the work. For production cabinetry where you’re running 50+ panels per session, a floor-standing machine justifies the cost.

Maintenance Tips

Replace sandpaper when the abrasive is loading up rather than cutting. Loading — where the pores of the sandpaper fill with wood dust — causes the drum to burnish rather than sand, which generates heat and can cause scorching. Keeping a cleaning stick nearby and running it across the drum periodically extends paper life significantly. Check and adjust conveyor tracking monthly. Lubricate the height adjustment threads per the manufacturer’s schedule. Clean the dust port and collection bag regularly — a clogged collection system creates a dust hazard and causes the paper to load faster.
